I’m always hoping for a Duran Duran cover I love, but sadly they always fall short for me. This is no exception, though I suppose I will give it points for sounding like a completely different song.

The soundtrack to Xanadu was the first album I ever bought with my own money. I emptied my coin “piggy” bank (it was actually Minnie Mouse) and put $1 increments into sandwich baggies, collecting them until I had enough for the album. It was one of those albums that opened up with pictures on the inside folds, and it had a kind of Part 1/Part 2 feel to the music - Part 1 being mainly songs by Olivia Newton-John and Part 2 being mostly E.L.O. songs.

This song brought the two together.

It was also a big roller rink song, too.

I suppose this song could qualify on the “not so guilty pleasure” themed day, but honestly I think the song is a bit too dear to me and my younger self to ever be categorized into anything that has the word “guilty” in it.

Alright, cover song confession time, I prefer both this cover, and Ryan Adams’ cover of Wonderwall to the Oasis original, so much so that after hearing both covers I actually decided to listen to Oasis more. I never did care for Oasis when they first came around, admittedly their negative reputation and hateful attitudes had a lot to do with it. I suppose I bought the hype, which I typically try to avoid, but with the Gallagher brothers, the hype stuck.

After hearing this song covered by two artists I love, well, I decided to give Oasis another go. It was a good second chance as I do love many of their songs now. But, when it comes to Wonderall, I still prefer the covers.

The Jazz Singer was one of my favorite movies when I was eleven years old. There was something about the story, the dreamer/dreams realized, the star-crossed love, and the music. I must have listened to the soundtrack a million times after seeing the movie, and later, when we had our first VCR, and even later when it played (often) on cable, I would watch it whenever I had the chance.

My love for some of the songs, and for the film itself, has stayed with me. This song is still one I will listen to if I catch it on the radio, and the movie still lives in my long list of favorite music films, holding place with the 1976 version of The Star is Born.

My absolute, all-time favorite love song. It feels so genuine and true to me, so honest and beautiful. The song speaks to the fact that no matter what comes before, when you truly are with someone you love the past, though it does exist and there are still feelings for it (how can there not be? It is all a part of each person’s story), that it does not change the love you have now.

I have loved it since I was a little girl, and I think I will always feel the same way about it. I think it will forever be my favorite love song.
